Your car or truck's AC system is under extreme pressure and the thermal expansion valve or orifice tube monitors the amount of pressure and the temperature of your A/C system. It calculates the precise amount of refrigerant that can safely go into the evaporator. A failing expansion valve or orifice tube often causes a vehicle's air conditioner to blow hot air.
Replace or Repair
- Expansion Valves: Too much refrigerant causes your evaporator to get too cold whereas too little refrigerant would result in inadequate cooling. The expansion valve is a complex valve that regulates refrigerant flow. This process of metering the refrigerant adjusts the flow according to the temperature of the refrigerant in the evaporator coil. Talk to one of the pro mechanics at Randy's Auto Repair and Tire, as this part can be replaced on its own and does not require the entire replacement of the AC assembly.
- Orifice Tubes: Unlike the expansion valve, the orifice tube is a simple fixed device with no moving parts. It therefore cannot vary the flow of refrigerant into the evaporator, but rather causes a permanent restriction in the system. However, like the expansion valve the orifice tube regulates refrigerant flow through the system and filters debris which may come through in its screen. Often fixing a "bad orifice tube" requires replacing the entire evaporator assembly.

If you need a place to take your car Randy's is the place to take your car. I took my car in Friday and yesterday because of what was going on with my car and in a matter of just a day or two my car was fixed and it is running great thank you to Randy and the guys that work at his shop and thank YOU LORD because without Randy and his guys who work hard everyday my car would not be running the way that it is today. My experience at the shop was great, the service on my car was phenomenal and the service while I was there waiting was great as well. So like I shared if you need a place to take your car Randy's is the place to take your car. So thank you again Randy and the guys who work there everyday. Y'all are doing an amazing job. I'm a new snowbird and wanted to ensure my 13 year old Toyota Tacoma would get me back to Michigan safely. I wanted the serpentine belt replaced and the brake fluid flushed. Turns out my truck needed rear brakes and 3 universal joints replaced. They kept my truck overnight and made all the necessary repairs for me. As a bonus, they fastened and quieted an annoying exhaust heat shield rattle. GREAT JOB, GREAT SHOP. THANK YOU
